“I’m glad you all could tear yourselves away from the projects you were working on to come talk to me this morning. I really won’t take long.”
“Stop playing, Perry, you know we work for you and do what you want.”
“Well, Bill, I was trying to be respectful and grateful.”
“Nigga, please. Stop with the jokes,” Scotch added.
“Yeah, you right,” I smiled. My crew laughed.
“So on a serious note.” Once I said that, I had everyone’s attention again. I told them that I wanted to clean up the city, rid it of some racist scum that lingered around for far too long. My crew looked at me like they wanted to know where this was coming from, but none of them dared ask me. I told them to devise a plan to make it happen, and I scheduled a meeting for that afternoon where they would give me the details of what they came up with. All of the guys left my office at the same time.
When Spence, the last one to exit, pulled my door closed, I leaned my head onto the back of my chair. I smiled at the thought of avenging my baby. A racist bastard let his intolerant ways get him killed, and his death caused a spiral of events that resulted in making my baby hurt and making my baby cry. I still can’t get the vision of her tear-stained face and sorrowful eyes out of my head. And even after she had a hot bubble bath and full body massage, Ginalda retired for the night full of grief.
“You racist bastard.” I’m well aware that I’m talking to myself. I can’t help it while I think of Alejandro and his dislike of anyone not Colombian.
“You may be gone but there are too many more around who are just like you.” I think about the police officer who beat a thirteen year old boy because he played his radio too loudly on the steps of his building. I recall the man who was stomped until his brain was scrambled because he didn’t get his license and registration fast enough. I think about the girl who couldn’t convince her teacher and principal that her classmate really did attempt to rape her in the school’s stairwell.
“THE KID GLOVES COME OFF TODAY! Racism has been around too long. It’s time to mow it down, one offender at a time.” I made my declaration, and it felt good.
“Knock, knock.”
“Come in.”
“Hello, Mr. Perry. What were you saying? Were you talking to me?”
“Oh no, Mrs. Graham. I was venting some feelings I had to get off of my chest. I was thinking out loud.”
“Alright then.” Lillian took a few slow steps back to leave. “Well, let me know if you want me for anything.”
“I certainly will do that.”
Mrs. Graham was leaving my office when I called her back.
“Lillian.”
“Yes, Mr. Perry?” Lillian smiled her biggest smile, displaying her greatest asset. She seemed pleased to be able to assist me. I hadn’t been able to think of anything to have her do for me since she set up the crews’ offices.
